Uganda

These 12 Ugandan UPMB health facilities received Ultrasound machines funded by Rad Impact
Why ultrasound??
Ultrasound is essential in providing even basic prenatal care. Knowledge gained from ultrasound such as the estimated fetal weight, location of the placenta and cord, and presenting part at time of delivery are all are all cruicial in planning the route of delivery and reducing maternal and fetal mortality. Ultrasound access also increases attendance at antenal visits and provides opportunities for infectious screening, treatment and pregnancy education.

One midwife from each of the 12 clinics received formal instruction from the Ernest Cook Ultrasound Research and Education Institute in ultrasound at 6 week course in Kampala prior to launching use of ultrasound in their home clinics.

Obstetrics and Neonatal Education Courses
With the new diagnosis capabilities that ultrasound brings, it became essential to provide additional training on the management of certain conditions diagnosed with ultrasound, such as placenta previa. Each of the 12 midwives returned to Kampala for the Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) and Helping Babies Survive (HBS) Courses in January 2017 and another set of courses is planned for June 2018.
